We envision a world where children are protected from the damaging, life-long effects of incarceration

ParolED to College (PTC) leverages the power of post-secondary education to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline and reduce juvenile recidivism.

ParolED to College seeks to interrupt the flow of youth and young adults from our communities into the justice system.

PTC Pilot Outcomes for SY 2017-18

  • 100% of seniors participating in Newark Public Schools pilot graduated with a high school diploma on time
  • 94% of seniors applied to and are enrolled in college; 40% were accepted into 4-year universities.
  • 100% of pilot students completed college preparatory and/or dual-credit college coursework
  • No new charges – 0% recidivism; 0% new level 3 and 4 disciplinary infraction
  • 100% of program participants exhibit new, pro-social aspirations

Guiding Principles:

  • Early College is a powerful, motivational, hope-building, skill-developing mechanism for justice-involved youth and at-promise students.
  • Personalized, student interest driven, critical pedagogy, culturally relevant instructional models are particularly effective for re-engaging disconnected youth.
  • Mentoring programs delivered by Credible Messengers are particularly effective at “breaking through” where traditional mentoring has not.
  • At-promise youths have unique non-academic, psycho-social and pragmatic needs that must be supported to ensure long-term academic success.
  • Credit-recovery and acceleration should be individualized, personalized, engaging, seamless and dynamic.

Projects/Outcomes:

For SY2017-18, ParolED to College (PTC) partnered with Newark Public Schools (NPS) to pilot an innovative school-based model for interrupting the school-to-prison pipeline.

PTC established an early college and mentoring pilot within the Talent Development Academy (TDA) at East Side High School. TDA serves vulnerable, at-promise and justice-involved students from every region of the city.

In the past, Talent Development Academy students registered rates of recidivism consistent with the state wide statistics, persistent level 3 and 4 disciplinary infractions, average GPA’s below 1.5, 50-60% graduation rates and 0% college-enrollment.
